You dont have to look like a super model, simply having a photo with great lighting and the know how of a seasoned photographer can really give you an edge over the rest.
Pubmed.gov analyzed ERAS photographs submitted by residency applicants based on photograph characteristics related to composition, attire, facial expression, hairstyle, and accessories.
Candidates that chose a white background over grey gave their photo a sense of clean and modern that made them appear to be more professional and commercial. This look was first made popular by the many apple commercials and has been adopted my some of Americans largest and most widely trusted brands. It was also noted that students who smiled and wore jackets in their photographs were more likely to be match. Gender specific characteristics were not found to be influential in the match outcome for applicants.
Your photo should include your full shoulders but they will still except it cropped like the example above. It's always better to have the photographer take a wider shot so you can crop it after to make sure you meet the taller height of the 3.5'" portion of the photo. Many students ask if it must be only forward facing like a passport photo and the answers is no, just make sure your dont do more than a 15 degree angle like all the photos on this page.

Only photos with a lot of colors will be saved at the full 100kb. If you are wearing only 3 colors its perfectly normal to be 55-80kb in size. (Resolution will still be a full 150DPI)
1)Bright lighting looks bests! it's always better to be a little over exposed than un exposed (darker) This will show way more face blemishes and have a muddy effect.
2) White background tends to have a more professional and modern feel. Grey was very popular in the 80s and 90s and can come across as dated.
3) Even if you take the photo yourself, Make sure you hire someone with Experience to properly compress your photo, Because this photo is so small and dimensions are not meant to be zoomed it's crucial to have a properly compressed so that it looks its best.

Nick is amazing! I really did not like the previous headshot that I did and found Studio Redleaf after searching for a photographer that could do medical residency headshots. Being a broke med student, I really did not want to pay $300+, but Nick charges $125 for ERAS/VSAS photos. He is truly a professional. I never once felt rushed and he allowed me to take my time and fix my hair/makeup right before the shoot. What I liked most is how detail-oriented he is - from fixing my necklace to my shirt to even the tiny little stray hairs that were popping out. We tested around with different angles and different smiles and every so often, he'd let me look at the photos and choose which ones I liked and we tried to do a few more of those exact ones. In the end, I walked out with 70 photos to choose from, and he even asked me if I wanted to take more. He was super receptive to what I wanted, enthusiastic, and professional. I ordered a medical residency headshot for $125 and more than happy with the results. My goal was to get a nice professional headshots as soon as possible for a nice price. I saw a lot of offers from other studios for $30 or $40 but after that I found that it is only for 1 retouched image. Nick sent me all photos in 20 minutes after the shooting. He also offering retouching of any image you want, During the shooting he was very friendly, professional and I did not feel any anxiety.
Pros: Great and fairly price service, quick response, great variety of welcome drinks (sodas, coffee), free parking.
Cons: Was a bit difficult to find parking entrance due to wrong GPS location, but they were provided precise explanations with google maps links.
Nick is very patient and professional. I had my residency application headshot there. He gave me a lot a advices during the whole session. I get all the shots immediately after via Dropbox. Great job!
